A circus of value…on the silver screen!

It looks like the oft-rumored BioShock movie is now for real, as Universal Pictures announced today that they’ll be developing 2K Games’ smash hit into a feature film. Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean) has been signed to direct and produce with John Logan (Sweeney Todd) currently in talks to do the screenplay. Something tells me that the underwatery, creature-filled goodness that is Rapture should be in some pretty safe hands with Verbinski and Universal at the helm. Little Sisters, Big Daddies, Splicers galore!
On the other hand, since a truly good video game movie has yet to be made (or has it?), I’m sure there are doubts that this will be the one to finally reach mainstream success. At first glance, it would seem that losing the game’s immersive, first-person perspective and interactivity would immediately put a damper on the show, but seeing some of the game’s great moments of suspense and terror play out on a big screen and being able to convey the characters with real actors might make a feature film that much stronger. If you’ve played BioShock, what’s your take?

The general lack of supporting characters in BioShock is going to make things a little difficult if they’re following directly to the game’s story. There are other characters that help out, but no one to, say, the level of Alyx from the Half-Life 2 games. They’d either have to write in a new character or do a whole new story set in Rapture in order to give anyone else any significant screentime.
I agree with what Dan said. I very skeptical about the movie transition.
erm, i AM very skeptical sorry that was a typo above
One can still always hope. Who would not want to be welcomed back to the circus of values.
I’m not sure about video games being made into movies. I haven’t seen Hitman or Doom, but i have seen FFVII Advent Children, and i thought that was done very well.
Well FFVII wasn’t really a fair comparison considering it was made using CGI and not acting and it was a continuation of the game, not the actual game being made into a movie.
But, Doom was horrible, it turned into the mutated virus idea, which to my knowledge, is everything doom is not. Resident Evil, not the best but definitely did not do that game justice.
Although as far as story line guy Dead or Alive did transition the story line over well, bu the acting was so raunchy the movie wasn’t that great. And let’s not even get started on the horror’s that were the Mortal Kombat Movies. *shivers* The first one was the only one that rocked hard core. But that is probably a bias MK fan’s opinion.
