Newspaper columnist discovers manga, is bemused

SasukeFrom the local paper

At school, she hid manga novels inside her science textbook until a teacher busted her for reading them in class. But at home, she’s free to peruse them over and over, like holy texts, and to supplement them with the animated versions on YouTube.

By watching the original cartoons with English subtitles, she’s picked up a little Japanese — erudition that she generously shares with her brother. Last week, with a Sharpie marker, she wrote “Baka” on his forehead.

“It means ‘idiot,’ ” she explained.

Because it was in Japanese, the language of manga, he thought it was cool.

Read the whole article. I dunno, maybe this is the sort of thing that happens when you name your daughter Mojo.

  1. “Local paper?” PiQ has no locality. We global.

  2. And that globe is named Houston!

  3. Saddly… she reminds me of one of my exs…

.oO(How many Kevins are there on this site? LOL)

  4. oh man i can’t stand Naruto…But good on her, i see manga as an alternate reality, somewhere to escape when life is just too hard. Without it, i wouldn’t know what to do.

  5. It’s odd. “Mojo” (for identity reasons, her name was changed) seems to be a new generation of anime fandom. I don’t see what’s wrong with a Mojo. I don’t even understand what the point the author of the article wants to make. Is she worried Mojo is living too much in a fantasy world? Is it the fact Mojo is writing incredible fan-based stories? What is it?

I applaud Mojo, but I say she needs to be supervised. You never know when those fictional crushes can mix into reality.

  6. i think its a pretty normal. She has a crush on a fictional character…
Manga is a good outlet to be creative and have fun.

  7. What’s wrong with a crush on an anime or manga character?

    Let me ask all of you gentlemen here;
How many of you have had a crush on Motoko Kusanagi (a.k.a. the Major) from GITS: SAC.

    Be Honoest. :)

  8. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Naruto sucks! Bleach is where it’s at! =)

  9. Naruto doesn’t suck.

  10. Yeah heaven forbid that “Mojo” reads a bunch of anime and manga and grows up to be like the writters of this magazine making a pretty penny because??? Oh yeah… they read animes and do other anime/manga related sh*t… Honestly guys… if you got a job opening in PiQ Email me… to kick it with Anime and make money at the same time is a dream come true!

P.S. Most teachers only have a problem with something if they feel like it is not “normal” however if you can give me a pure deffinition of normal OTHER THAN “the way most people are” then perhaps there might be some logic. Otherwise unless you act like they did as children… expect this kinda sh*t to follow you in life. :(

  11. I don’t see anything wrong with this…
People rant about anime fandom, and having a fav charecter and all, but they could care less about the smaller kids with Corbin Blue pics all over their walls and gushing on him endlessly?

Whats the differance. Different forms of entertainment.
    Thats all it is.

  12. Wow,what a turbo nerd.

  13. honestly, i think it’s fine. cute, amusing, and perfectly fine.

in my opinon, this is far safer for her than to chase/obsess over after some real-life boy and get her heart broken. as OtakuBen said, we all need somewhere to escape to sometimes, and a fictional world is the safest place to be. as long as she understands the line between fiction and reality (and it seems from her quote that she does), by all means - carry on!

the only thing that i can possibly imagine being worried over is the fanfiction…some of that stuff can be pretty intense for a 12-year-old. i hope mom is educated in what gets posted (it seems that she is, based on her knowledge of yaoi).

all i have to say is - have fun Mojo. have fun and welcome to the otaku universe…:)

  14. I see nothing wrong with being a super otaku, whereas, having a crush on a fictional character IS a little strange but somewhat normal.

P.S.: naruto haters: lay off the crack! If you don’t like it it’s cool but guess what, BRATS, you’re not the center of the world. At least, I don’t need to know you’re attention-craving opinions!!!!!

  15. ^^^^^

Wow, these are the kind of people naruto appeals to!(they think haters are on crack and they themselves have anger issues.)
    ——————————————————————————————————————

On a side note I would like to say that she’s young she should crush on characters… it’s normal. (at least that is what I think) when I was 12 I really enjoyed yuyu hakusho: Ghost files and had a crush on Keiko Yukimura lol.

  16. Although this only somewhat relates to the arcticle: anyone else live in an area where there are no women what so ever that like anime, manga, or videogames, or is it just where I live?

  17. there nothing wrong with having a crush on a anime character i have two current anime crushes 1. sunako( from thewallflower) 2.tifa (from final fantasy advent children) if anyone tell you they watch anime or read manga and they dont have a crush on one of the characters there probably lie there butts off

  18. Thats great that the mom seems pretty well opened to her daughter’s hobbies, I hate seeing parents who try to drive their children’s passions and expressions to that which seems “normal” by social standards. Way. to. go. mama.

Oh and I totally remember that fanfiction phrase of my life, (even though it centered around Harry Potter) good times, good times.

  19. Baka, yeah, that’s a lot of Japanese she has picked up…
Baka is one of the most common words used by anime fans. Or at least… The ones who think they can speak Japanese.

I’m not really sure if this is supposed to be amazing though? Maybe some parents are strict and I just don’t understand. My parents will sometimes watch anime movies with me. If I watch it in teh living room…

Haha, but it’s fairly obvious that the teacher wasn’t concerned about WHAT she was reading, but when she was reading it (in class!!).

Well, whatever, she will get over it soon enough. And be like “Why the heck did I spend so much on Naruto!?” XD Maybe in a year or so. Maybe…
Ok, actually I wouldn’t be surprised either way. Notice I too, use an anime characters name on the occasion. I suppose though, it’s the same as people falling in love with characters played by real people. Only in these cases, the characters are 2D, haha.

And then you say...
