Episode 0

Hello,
Just to prove we are not sitting around all day eating Fritos and wiping the grease on our tank tops, here is the highly experimental Episode 0 of The PiQ Podcast (the PiQ-cast? Perhaps I’m getting too far ahead of myself). Have a listen — just press that little “Play” button up above this text — and you’ll get to hear myself, Robert, Paul, and Scott discuss the sorts of things we’ve been up to while working on this magazine.
We got print copies of Issue 1 in the other day, and I hear that some subscribers have received it as well. Huzzah! Tremendous! We hope you will get it soon if you haven’t, or later this month when it hits newsstands. We honestly care what you think about this issue, so keep letting us know.
To enter our little contest/giveaway thing, be sure to use “PiQ Podcast Contest” as the subject of your e-mail. We’ll probably be announcing those winners by the time our next episode goes up, so get to typing!

Wow, what a bunch of dorks!
OH WAIT I’M ONE OF THEM!
Well, I have taken time to listen or “watch” the first podcast of PiQ and I found it funny. Now at first I thought the magazine was pronounced Pi Q. The word Pie or the mathmatical term Pi and then the letter Q but to my surprise it is closer to pick. “Entertainment for the rest of us” surely it shall be because I said so. lol. Just kidding. I heard that almost half of the magazine will be from newtype Japan translated and the other of what you choose. It will be interesting to see what would the whole entire staff would develop after hearing the podcast. Also, I too, would like to get a PS3 for Disgaea 3 but I am torn between the decision of getting Wii or PS3 when I get the money. Right now I thinking about the price of the magazine and of course I will look for my “Golden Ticket” waiting inside for me. So, in the end I wish PiQ success in the future.
What? Some people have it now! Golly, I hope mine comes soon.
Coo’, though, I’ll check out this crazy PiQ-cast.
*sits back looking at “The Magazine that Must Never be Named” and thinks* You were asking what new could be added to the magazine… I would love to see images, sketches, and possibly mangas, that were specifically created for PiQ… something original that no one else would have would be a relief to see for once figuring virtually all magazines use graphics from other media “screen captures, art books, movie posters, etc…” and would be awesome to see things brand new when we pay to hear about new anime/manga… also improve the listings of where we can get anime gear! Also one of the BEST parts of the magazines was the free DVD content, so please we need more new anime and mangas to watch! *glares at the empty list of interesting movies or shows coming out*
I’d love to see more “The art of” As shown in the previous mangazine.
That was always one of my favorite things to look at.
The Free DVD also was great. I found so many series that I love because of the free episode provided on the DVD.
And the Ceterfold was always nice
Well, I listened to the ‘cast and I was laughing pretty much the whole way through. You guys are a riot. I have my issue of PiQ (got it today in the mail) and I’m looking forward to getting the double issues since I had paid $80 for the year of NewType. It’s great to hear that all the same staff that that made NewType possible still remain for the production of PiQ. I too would like there to be the DVD again. I found out about Kanon (2006) from the December or January issue I think it was of NTUSA, and I was hooked. Such a heartwarming story.
Keep it up!
Shiggy
@Kevin: I would LOVE to have original manga created specifically for us. Not in the works now, but certainly worth thinking about. I think people will be very happy with our forthcoming manga inserts.
@Jo: Probably can’t do Official Art as it was before, but we’ll keep our minds spinning on it. Extras may be in future issues, but first we wanna make sure we’re creating the best magazine we possibly can.
@Shiggy: So glad you’re happy! We’ll be recording a new podcast soon, so keep your ears open!
I know what you mean about the “ah-nime” versus “annie-me” issue– I say both too. When people ask me, I say they’re both correct pronunciations. “Ah-nime” is how they say it in Japan, of course, but it’s derived from the English word animation, which is why a lot of English-speakers instinctively say “annie-me.”
Manga, however, is always mahnga with me.
@gia Yeah, I don’t have a strong feeling regarding how to pronounce “anime,” which is why I sort of use both, even though one makes me sound like a pretentious dork. :-/
@Scott and staff: Will you be inviting special guests to the podcast episodes to speak about and/or review shows? I think that’d be cool. If you would do that I’d prepare a review of a show that’s underexposed/not as popular as others, to educate everyone, and make them a fan of that show.
Is that idea feasible?
I’m not really into Podcasts, and this is more of a reason why. I listened to it hoping to see if it had anything else about the future of the magazine. There really wasn’t. It was mostly just you guys bantering and joking around. That’s fine, of course, but I don’t need to sit here for about 30 minutes with nothing as a result.
@Mark - It sounds to me like maybe you’re not into podcasts.
We did this as a kind of dry run, and I don’t think we really expected anyone to even listen. My memories of it all are kinda faint now, but I’m almost positive you can hear us talking about what our goals are for the magazine. We figured keeping it to around 30 minutes would help us just feel it out and know what to do better when have a real audience.
We’ll be doing another soon, so if you can spare a whole ‘nother 30 minutes, maybe you can tune in again? We’ll try to behave and be more focused next time, I promise.
Hey guys……..Actually enjoyed the podcast, it was like farting-around with some friends. Hopefully after you guys get a copy of the first issue, you may have something to say about the future direction of PiQ and some good reasons why I shouldn’t miss “the Magazine that shouldn’t be mentioned”.
Come-on, be proud of what you guys put out with NUSA. I said I would give you a chance, give me a chance and don’t belittle my angst at having a magazine that I purchased an expensive two year subscription for replaced with another that has almost none of the qualities of why I was drawn to NUSA. You are a beast of a truly different nature and, yet, I haven’t cancelled.
Hey Scott, have you filed a police report about the theft at the printing factory? I did receive my first issue of PiQ on March 3rd. Since I had a copy before you guys did I would have eagerly and with pleasure sat in on the podcast and talked you up and explained how different PiQ is from NUSA and the circumstances that led to NUSA’s demise (if explained to me) without making light of NUSA subscribers fustration and understanding posts that may be negative to PiQ. You may be freed from the shackles and pain that you endured in putting out the magazine, poster, and dvd but we feel a loss, as the customer.
Oh yeah; you’ll try to behave and be focused next time? Don’t you dare. I’ll be listening with a beer in my hand…………
Mark
Hey, this podcast was a total sausage-fest. I was just wondering if your magazine is also a sausage-fest?
KTHX
In all seriousness, for having a booth the levels of your hosts were kind of off - next time put the soft spoken guy closer to the mic.
@erin Why hello there. Thanks for the kind words. Our magazine is not, in fact, a sausage-fest, as a glance at the masthead will readily prove! Heather toils tirelessly in InDesign, and Bridgett’s print production expertise is like unto a force of nature when it comes to the logistics of not missing deadlines. Finally, Marisa’s work in subscription fulfillment is as critical as it is incomprehensible (to my rheumy editorial eyes, anyway.) I hope this answers your question!
Yes @ InDesign! Is it version CS3?
Very funny podcast. But why are you making fun of St. Louis?
Hey, Erin! Sausage-y-ness notwithstanding, we did notice the sound issues and thanks for the tip. That said, Kev’s a big guy so if anyone wants to volunteer to make him get closer to the mic…
@Kelley - No, we’re still rockin’ the original CS. It’s served us well and frankly, I can’t imagine what other possible feature they could cram in there.
@Ricki - I suppose much the same reason people make fun of Scott for his thick “Georgia Peach” accent.
Hi Guys,
Curious as to what age group you are going for in the magazine now? Since most magazines are outdated now days with Engadget, Next Generation, Internet sites, etc., how are you going to make sure that your content is current or exclusive and not 2 months behind. As you know certain mags are facing bankruptcy, EGM, and Gamepro due to the shift of the market and are having to restructure.
One thing I would like to see you guys do is a review of Japanese music that can actually be found on i-tunes. Importing music through snail mail is a chore and I no longer do it. I buy it on i-tunes or I don’t at all.
I will see if I can find your mag at Wally world and give it a flip through.
With so many podcasts out there now trying to get my time, I’ve got to say this podcast gets an “F”. This podcast was just like a bunch of guys sitting around shooting the breeze, not worth my time. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and wait and see if you improve with the 2nd one. If you don’t, then bye-bye.
I found this very funny, though it would be cool if they did a PiQ-Vidcast. Can’t wait for the other magazines in the future and the future podcast.
