Cover sneak peek
Back in January, as word began to spread about PiQ, someone did us a solid and shared our early mockup cover with the public. While we weren’t thrilled about that part, we did watch the reaction to it and took note. And just to show that we aren’t resting on our laurels, we made sure that our final cover would indeed look a bit different so we can start this magazine off with a bang.
Here’s a quick look at the cover of our first issue, coming March 14th.
Yep, that’s all we can share for now. Stay tuned for more!

Robert wanted to keep it a secret, but I’ll let you guys in on the truth.
The cover story, as you can plainly see, is about dirty toilet bowls.
I’ll give this issue a try, but when I subscribed to Newtype USA, I signed up for a magazine that had Anime inside of it. I don’t care about Video Games, or any of the extras that this magazine is going to have. In fact, it seems this new magazine has more other stuff then “Anime.” But I’ll at least see what the first issue is, before I decide. But I am pretty sure that if this magazine is only like 5 pages Anime and 25 other crap, then I’ll be cancelling my subscription. I didn’t sign up for the rest.
@GrdAdmiral - That’s a legitimate concern, but from our years of studies, research and common sense, we’ve been able to deduce that most people are into other things too. It’s like scientifically proven and stuff. All we ask is that you give us a chance and see what new things we can offer you.
(Oh, and one thing we can promise you is that we will definitely have more than 30 pages in each issue.)
*Dies* D-Dirty Toilet Bowls, huh? I can see everyone’s trying to work hard on the Magazine, e-except I’m not so sure about the cover yet, seeing as what Kevin is saying… (I also have a question; is Bob really your uncle?) But, I can’t wait until the release~!! ^^
This is great! I love toilet bowls, especially the dirty kind…
Anyway, I really look forward to the mag. It sounds scary to those who think they are only interested in anime, but I’m sure they’ll warm up to PiQ once they find something else they like. I’m certainly excited about the variety of stuff being covered (toilet bowls!), which may actually lead to getting other people interested in anime. Heck, since the same staff of NTUSA is working on it, PiQ will obviously be very well done.
Can’t wait to see the first issue (and what’s really on that cover)!
What the hell you guys !!!! What happened to Newtype!!!!!
Is this “new” magazine going to be just like that kick ass tall magazie with posters and a dvd and occasionally some free beez? Look you have my support and all but it just sucks to see the end of a great magazine. Please dont make it lame and trendy and keep the spirit of anime alive!!!!!!!!!
good luck!
well im going to need a new
fav magazine so dont let me down
im looking foreword to picking
up an issue.hope its good
^_^
PiQ magazine
hmmm
Finally, the topic I could only dream of reading turned reality! Hallelujah!
Knowing how totally epic Newtype USA has always been, it was like Christmas again when I heard you guys are starting PiQ! I don’t doubt at all that it’s going to do anything less than completely rock. Can’t wait for the release issue!
I feel anxious and confused. I doubt it’ll be as good as NTUSA but at least I hope is not as bad as my mind keeps telling me it is. {P
i hope it has anime dvd and still has the posters like newtype usa thats the things im really hoping for
I think Piq sounds like it’s going to be pretty awesome. Sure NewType was cool, but now we’ve got all the same staff putting out a great magazine about all sorts of cool stuff.
Sure it might not be ALL anime, but they’ve still got the old NewType reading anime fans in mind as part of their demographic. I’m pretty sure it’ll be awesome.
Im confused. I still have my subscription, will they cancel it out and refund me or what? I will miss Newtype USAs posters and the free dvds. and the whole purpose of knowing its going to be what you bought for is going dim with this magazine if this mag does not work then I just as well go for another anime mag.
Another question is the pricing on this new magazine.
@faithful subscriber - Your current NTUSA subscription will be transitioned to PiQ automatically. Also, FYI the cover price of PiQ will be $6.99 USD and $7.99 CAN.
@faithful subscriber - I was told that all remaining issues on our Newtype subscriptions would be honored at two issues of PiQ apiece. I do hope this still the case, considering the difference between the cover prices.
Will PiQ offer a preview DVD of new anime? That was a major reason for me getting Newtype. Without it……
Another question i have is the name. How/Why did you come up with it?
I have to say, I’m really dissapointed that Newtype-USA is going the way of the Dodo bird. I really liked having a magazine dedicated to anime but i guess everything must come to an end, even if its good right? I just hope that PiQ can fill the shoes and I hope that a good portion is still dedicated to anime. Ugh….I’m still abit sad about the ending but time to move on, ya?
Seriously the ” T__T ” dude , seems like one of your Hard-core fans but trolling cuz well , I bet he just wants attention and craving for human interaction. Or worse he could be a life-less teen or child with social and mental problems. So i’ll go like this with him : ” Go GET A Life , Or better move your ASS and go do something good , And please put your tongue back in your mouth , It’s must be dirty cuz everybody’ve been stepin on it”
To PiQ staff , Best of luck , I am actually excited you chose to hit a bigger audience with your new mag , Now it covers all different acpects of life for those who are intrested in having a life and knowing the latest .
I know I’m being a picky defense here, but to those who keep saying this stuff: just because it has features you don’t like doesn’t make it a failure. The only thing that would is if they decided to use bad journalism, which won’t be happening here. ;p
So I wish you people would learn the difference and stop saying that the magazine will be this so-called “crap” just because you don’t connect with the new features. They may actually be really good and you’re just giving up without giving it a chance. It’s NOT about what you want (although they consider the readers, that doesn’t mean they ask specifically YOU for ideas). Hey, I need more forms of entertainment because all I was focused on was anime.
I think it’s funny that some people complain that there are not more free DVDs. I’ll admit that some of those got me in to buying certain series, but seriously, just go buy DVDs if you want to watch something. (Now that PiQ’s cheaper, you should be able to afford at least ONE.)
And stop thinking you know how to run a magazine. =\
I joined Newtype USA last October, I subscribed for the free DVD that was included to see if new animes are worth buying. You can say I paid $80 for a “FREE DVD”. All I want to know does PIQ have one? Another magazine I subscribed to that started in June does. The DVD would be the desiding question if I would renew or not.
T_T why is this issue taking so looong to come out?!
like everyone else in here im sad about NTUSA closing…..but im just going to wait till the mag comes out and see for my self if is worth buy another issues or just stop……hoppe is a good mag and best of luck in the first release….
I wouldn’t buy this mag. I was a Newtype subscriber for a year & in that year I SUPPOSEDLY won the Gotta get it sweapstakes & guess what????? They scumbagged me on my prize. They told me I won Gitaroo man for the psp & magically it never came!! I called a bunch of times & sent ton’s of emails & it was always, “it will be sent soon,” or some one said they would look into it & nothing ever happened. Think twice b4 doing business with these lames. They were even taking subscriptions up until the very last month even after they new NTUSA was done with. Thats a real scumbag move. There’s are reason why they failed with NTUSA It’s called Karma when you rip off the good people thats what you get. I hope you fail like you did b4
As a message to those people who have already posted negative comments or outright lies and to those people who are planning to follow their lead, please take a short three minutes to discover the simple truth behind the end of NTUSA before making such unbased accusations. It’s not hidden anywhere, nor is it something that a dedicated subscriber-as so many have claimed to be-should have missed either on this site or in the magazine’s last issue. NTUSA did not “fail” as claimed in the above comment; such an idea was even explicitly stated as not being the case. If you want to know what really happened, then read the information on this site, on NTUSA’s site, or even in the final issue of NTUSA itself.
I thought this was supposed to be comments about the first issue cover? Anyway, I have every issue of NTUSA (sans DEC 2002) and if PIQ is produced by the same staff It is at least worth a shot, right? I admit I’m more of an anime fan than anything else, but hey, I didn’t even know what anime was until I picked up the APR 2003 issue of NTUSA. I don’t understand how people would limit themselves and their interests just because one good thing came to an end. Well, that’s my piece (for now!) Good luck PIQ, see ya at at bookstore near me!
i think the main issue arise because money is involved. for those people who applied for the NEWtype magazine for this year, or for those who still have their subscription left over, just simplying changing it to X2 piq magazine is not really an honest way to start. People paid for newtype not piq. I don’t have anything against Piq, (since the first issues is not even released yet) but I think it would be smarter to just refund the newytpe money and start fresh for piq. or at least give the customers a choice to bail out on their subcription with refunds or try out piq.
I am really hoping that PIQ would be an interesting magazine and can live up to newtype (in a different way)
@T_T - Just one question. If I said our big cover story was all about SCUBA diving, would you still hate us as much?
@Gene C - I’ve personally looked into the matter and will be contacting you soon with more information. I can’t promise anything (me being a scumbag and all) but we’re certainly interested in making things right.
@Altered State University - You have the right idea. It’s a shame that some folks just insist on tearing things down without giving them a chance.
@jin - Subscribers will always have the option to cancel your subscription. Sure, we’re scumbags, but only a little.
looking forward to see how this will turn out! hopefully theres some good anime. will the mag be just as big as the Newtype ones? (just wondering)
Well, I can’t bash a magazine I really haven’t looked over yet. And I won’t. Everyone has their interests and I respect the idea of trying to appeal to a larger audience. Still. Money, as stated by jin, is the biggest issues for those of us that have been subscribers for short AND long periods. For myself. I can’t say I’m interested in this magazine at all just for it’s stated content. I have 0 interest in any of the above aside from the anime. I don’t play video games nor watch tv on a regular basis. In terms of comics, you can say I have blinders turn to anything that isn’t manga. Heck, I rarely make it out to a movie theatre. Newtype was a welcome item in my mailbox and I shall sorely miss it deeply. Still, I wish all the staff on PIQ the best of luck and hope those too bitter to give it a chance won’t drag you guys down too much.
Well, I really don’t know what to say yet about this. I just finished reading through the February issue of NTUSA and thought the comment on the bottom of the last page (the Oh no! segment) was a hoax. But after just recently visiting NTUSA’s website, I see it not to be a hoax. This was 1 week ago.
At first I was in awe at the idea that NTUSA would no longer be around. I have been a reader since issue #1 and a subscriber since volume 2. It has been a great magazine and provided those who are anime/manga/gaming fans to name a few, a great deal of up and coming information that would otherwise not be available in the English language. Now I see this new publication, PiQ, to be a by-product of the (remaining?) members of the NTUSA production team.
I’m very dubious at this new publication. Why so? Because, it will be an American based publication unlike NTUSA which was rendered after the Japanese publicaion of Newtype. America already has a plethora of gaming, movie, tv, pop-cultural publications. How much more or unique material could PiQ possibly cover? Even if a percentage will be covering anime or manga, is this material going to be covering Japanese anime/manga? Or other asian material? Might it also cover European and/or American anime/manga material? I see it will cover comics (presuming American material) but there are already good sources for this as I used to be a HUGE fan in my youth (Wizard I believe used to be the #1 for this coverage).
I am fortunate enough to have taken 2 years of Japanese during my early college years and my girlfriend has 4 years under her belt. Even if she needs to help me read a lot of it, I have already subscribed to the Japanese Newtype via J-lists subscription offerings (thank goodness!) however, I feel TERRIBLE for those who need to rely on an English publication as I felt NTUSA was the last authentic magazine out there covering this material.
Another concern is I do not see any focus on music in this new PiQ publication. As small as it may of been (2-4 pages?) in NTUSA, I at least had some small coverage on Asian music releases and anime soundtrack material. I often spend a few hundred dollars a year purchasing some of this material through yesasia, but now must completely rely on my own intuition on discovering new material.
The pull-out poster and DVD previews were a staple I looked forward to every month. As I’m finishing my 2nd BA degree and will be tackling 2 Masters come fall, I no longer have time to watch any fan-based sub’d anime, so I rely completely on American releases and a good 35% of this decision making came from the previews on the DVD. Keeping this feature might be wise for PiQ, even if instead of a tangible form, you had web-based previews.
Hopefully these concerns will be of help to PiQ as they wanted customer feedback. I will stop by my local bookstore come the end of March and see if they have the debut issue of PiQ. I’m hoping it does not come wrapped in plastic, so I can peruse the pages and get a feel for the new publication. If it is wrapped, I’ll most likely pass and let others read and review for me.
Either way, good luck to the PiQ crew on your new publication.
Will I be able to pick this up at my local store when this comes out or am I forced to buy it online?
How many issues have come out?
1 or 2?
I have a two year sub to NTUSA paid for, in check, and I have recieved one PIQ.
Is says April on it.
Was there a March issue I did not receive?
So, where can I buy an issue in the stores? I wanna check it out before I subscribe.
@Erik/gia - You should be able to find our first issue in stores and on newsstands in about a week, right around March 14th. If you have trouble finding a copy or your local store doesn’t carry it, be sure to let us know.
@Hailey - The April 2008 issue is the first issue of PiQ. There was no March issue of Newtype USA or PiQ.
Great, I hope Wally World, Target, or Shop-ko has it in stock when it goes on sale.
First issue of PiQ just arrived at my house today. Took me a few seconds to figure out where the cover’s sneak peek was. I wont spoil other than to say its unfortunately, not a toilet bowl; but, errr, the left hand of someone.
But skimming through leads me to believe its a magazine I will enjoy (will read cover to cover tomorrow at work) and I am glad I didn’t rush to cancel my 2-year subscription that carried over from New-type usa.
@Robert I just got my first issue and I have to say it must of have a great effort to publish a new Mag out of scratch in such short time, Go through a bumpy road with the other Mag, cope with the change and then deal with the fans complaints, thats got to be tough and you got my respects, hats off to you guys for making this possible. When you guys stopped the other issue it could of been over and no more magazines period! But it does show that you cared and decided to go on. I just hope that in the long run that those that left, angry or just playing stubborn undertsand why the change was made, and get over this and start over with this new mag. I just got my first issue and Im already into it, Just wished it came in a plastic cover or bag because mine came a bit damp since it rains alot here in Houston.
It needs to be organized a little better. It would be a great magazine if it gets organized better just like NT was. try it please.
